When it comes to vaping, you have a choice of several types of coils. Most people stick to either a traditional coil system or mesh coils, with the latter being the newer option. The more you learn about each of these options, the better equipped you will be to make a decision regarding which type of coil to use.
The typical coil found in a vaping device is either one or two wires that have been twisted to create a shape resembling a spring. This has been the standard design for atomizer coils since the vaping industry began.
In contrast, mesh coils are not actually coils, which is why some people just call them mesh. Instead, it is a piece of metal mesh. In most cases, this mesh has been rolled into the shape of a cylinder.
The regular coils used for decades work perfectly fine, but mesh coils were created to improve efficiency. The mesh design lets you take advantage of a larger surface area for the heating wire. That bigger surface area results in larger clouds. Additionally, the exterior of the mesh has improved coil-to-cotton contact, which reduces hot spots and improves the efficiency of wicking.
Mesh coils are the latest method of increasing the surface area of the coil. Other methods through the years include the use of two coils as opposed to the standard one. There have also been systems that use up to 12 heating wires.
If you can expand the surface area by increasing the number of wires, then why did vaping companies create mesh coils instead? The problem comes with the increased coil mass when you braid, wind, or twist the wires. The higher mass of the coil requires increased wattage.
Additionally, coils with larger masses need more ramp-up time to reach the potential production of vapor. It is also more common to experience burned wicks with these higher-mass coils due to the amount of time they remain hot.
To supplement the issue of the higher mass, wound and twisted coils can have problems with spit back. The act of winding or twisting the coils creates little nooks and crannies that let the e-liquid pool. If the e-liquid pools, then the coil is likely to spit then pop as you vape. You can get around this with a screen in place or adjusting the airflow, but most vapers see that as a hassle.
Mesh coils overcome these challenges while also offering other benefits.
Mesh coils stand out with their impressive surface area. This large surface area means that more e-liquid gets vaporized simultaneously. That results in increased vapor that, in turn, leads to stronger flavor.
Some people also feel that the higher surface area and stronger flavor associated with using mesh coils result in a better flavor. This is somewhat subjective.
Most importantly, mesh coils have a low mass along with a large surface area. This eliminates all of the issues associated with a high mass. In other words, mesh coils require reasonable amounts of wattage, heat up quickly, and cool quickly.
That spitting issue mentioned above is common with traditional coils, as is the popping sound when you press the button to start the fire. This noise can be frustrating and disruptive.
The good news is that the design of mesh coils means there are almost no spaces for e-liquid to collect. That eliminates the popping sound and the risk of spit back.
Those who love using mesh instead of traditional coils also appreciate the consistency that comes with it. This is one of the biggest challenges with traditional coils as each hit will be slightly different, and you may even get one dry hit or two. That inconsistency occurs in traditional coils since their spiral layout will not evenly contact the cotton wick. In contrast, mesh covers the wick’s whole surface area for even quality, as well as even hits.
It is also possible that mesh coils will last longer than traditional ones, offering you a better investment. This comes down to the design of traditional coils. They will heat beginning in the middle and working their way outward. That means that by the time the outer edges of the coil are warm enough to create the vapor you want, the middle will be very hot. Sometimes, this heat is enough for the wick to burn, which could ruin the coil’s flavor.
In contrast, mesh coils will heat evenly without hot spots. That results in a reduced chance of burning the wick, which could improve the durability of the coil.
While mesh coils offer a great alternative to traditional coils, they still have some drawbacks.
Mesh coils also tend to consume more e-juice than other coils. This is the tradeoff for the consistent hits, bigger clouds, stronger flavor, and faster heating. As such, you are likely to spend a bit more on e-liquid if you use a mesh coil.
Depending on the tank that you currently use, you may experience reduced vapor production when you switch to a mesh coil.
To get the cloud-chasing experience that you want, you would need to opt for a dual- or triple-coil configuration for your mesh coil. Just keep in mind that going with those would increase your wattage requirements.
The other issue is that mesh coils do not work well for mouth-to-lung vaping. That type of vaping requires small coils that have restrictive airflow. In contrast, mesh coils usually are wide with open airflow.
Mesh coils tend to be a popular option when you want direct-to-lung inhaling. In contrast, traditional coils are better for mouth-to-lung vaping. Overall, however, mesh coils include numerous improvements over the traditional design, offering a quicker heat-up, more even hits, enhanced durability, and more.
